The costs of a workation

A workation is when you take your office on the road with you, effectively combining work and vacation. 

In theory, it’s the best of both worlds: you get to travel to new and exciting places while still getting paid and being productive. 

But is it really worth it? Let’s take a look at the cost of a workation to see if it’s something that’s feasible for you.

One of the biggest costs of a workation is, of course, travel. If you’re planning on going somewhere that’s not within driving distance, you’ll need to factor in the cost of flights, car rentals, or other forms of transportation. 

Furthermore, you’ll also need to account for the cost of accommodation. While there are many ways to save money on travel (staying in hostels or Airbnbs instead of hotels, for example), it’s still going to add up.

Another cost to consider is the opportunity cost of taking a workation. 

That is, what are you giving up by taking a week or two off from work? If you’re self-employed, this may not be as big of an issue. 

But if you have a full-time job with set vacation days, are you willing to give up some of those hard-earned days off? For many people, their vacation time is sacred and they don’t want to use it for work purposes.

Finally, there’s the question of productivity. When you’re on vacation, chances are good that your mind isn’t 100% focused on work. And that’s okay! Vacations are meant for relaxation and rejuvenation. 

However, when you’re on a workation, you’re expected to be productive despite being in a new environment with new distractions. For some people, this simply isn’t possible or desirable. 

So, is a workation worth it? It depends. For some people, the opportunity to travel while still being productive is too good to pass up. 

For others, the costs (both financial and opportunity) outweigh the benefits. Ultimately, only you can decide whether a workation is right for you.
