Convincing your employer about a workation

There are plenty of good reasons to take a workation. For one, it can help improve your productivity by getting you out of the usual day-to-day grind. 

A change of scenery can also do wonders for your creativity and mental well-being. And of course, it’s a great opportunity to explore new places and cultures.

If you can make a convincing case that a workation will be beneficial for both you and your employer, then you stand a good chance of getting approval. 

Here are some key points to remember:

Be clear about what a workation is and is not. A workation is not a vacation – it’s an opportunity to work in a different location, often with the added benefit of being able to explore a new place at the same time. 

Explain how a workation will benefit your employer. In addition to the potential productivity boost, highlight other advantages such as being able to tap into new markets or collaborate with colleagues in other time zones. 

Be prepared to compromise. If your manager is hesitant about the idea, offer to take a shorter trip or to stick to locations that are easy to get to in case they need to get in touch with you. 

Have a solid plan in place. Before you request a workation, make sure you have everything sorted in terms of accommodation, travel arrangements, and so on. 

The last thing your boss wants is for you to be stranded somewhere without a way to get back or contact them. 

Keep an open mind. If your boss says no, try not to take it personally – there may be valid reasons why they don’t want to approve your request. But if they say yes, then enjoy your workation!
